Feeding the Homeless in Asheville Nc

The following services are currently available to help support the homeless population of Asheville, as of April 1, 2020.

Handwashing stations are found at sites where food is being provided. Additional trash receptacles have also been deployed to these sites: ABCCM, 24 Cumberland Ave.; AHOPE Day Center, 19 N. Ann St.; Haywood Street Congregation, 297 Haywood St.; and 12 Baskets 610 Haywood Rd., W. Asheville.

Porta-Johns are located at ABCCM Crisis Ministry (downtown), 24 Cumberland Ave.; ABCCM Medical Ministry, 155 Livingston St. (River Arts District); AHOPE Day Center; Haywood Street Congregation; and WNC Rescue Mission, 225 Patton Ave.

Food and Day Services

Monday-Friday

AHOPE open from 8 a.m.-12 noon (bathrooms, showers, mail, storage)

The Mission will offer bag meals for lunch and dinner

ABBCM Downtown Crisis Ministry (24 Cumberland Ave.), hot meals to go, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Tuesday

12 Baskets will offer food to go from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Wednesday

Haywood St. Congregation will offer lunch to go, 10:30 a.m.-12 noon

Thursday

12 Baskets will offer food to go, 11-1, and lunch time in Battery Park

First Baptist Church offers bag lunches and food boxes to go, 12 noon

Saturday & Sunday

AHOPE open from 8 a.m.-12 noon (bathrooms, showers, mail, storage)

Saturday

Haywood St. Congregation will offer lunch to go from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon

Sunday

Haywood St. Congregation will offer breakfast to go, 8:30 a.m.-10 a.m.

Church of the Advocate will offer meals to go at 2:30 p.m.

ABCCM Crisis Ministry Sites

All four ABCCM Crisis Ministry sites continue to offer the normal services of food boxes, clothing, furniture, appliances, household goods, and financial assistance. Once families or individuals come to their closest site and register, they conduct intake via phone.

For clothing needs, ABCCM staff are shopping for clients and offering some choices based on the list provided to the staff during the intake process. If clients need a food box and transportation is a barrier, ABCCM can set up a delivery once the need has been assessed.

ABCCM's downtown site, located at 24 Cumberland Ave., provides to go meals Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ABCCM Veterans Restoration Quarters and Steadfast House – No more Code Purple shelter for this season. All guests and visitors are being screened. Meal times are spread out to decrease the number of people gathered at any single time. All passes for residents in long-term programs have been cancelled except in emergency circumstances. A nurse is available on-site to consult with anyone who is symptomatic.

Asheville Transit (ART) bus service remains fare-free, and the buses and transit station are being cleaned on an increased schedule.

BeLoved Asheville can be reached at (828) 412-2054 for food and supply delivery requests.

First Baptist Church continues to offer bagged lunches and food boxes on Thursdays at noon.

The VA walk-in clinic remains operational and continues to have staff in the office to address urgent needs. If you have access to a phone, you can call (828) 298-7911, ext. 1198.

Haywood Street Congregation – Haywood will provide a hot to-go lunch on Thursdays. Haywood Street Respite is currently closed and not accepting new referrals.

Downtown Welcome Table is serving lunch on Wednesdays and Saturdays and breakfast on Sundays. All meals are "to-go" style, with boxes being served from multiple stations around their campus. Hours for Wed/Sat lunch are 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Sunday breakfasts are 8:30-10 a.m. Other activities on campus are temporarily suspended, including God's Outfitters Clothes Closet, fresco visitation, haircuts, art, and acupuncture.

The Steady Collective has a mobile unit on campus for syringe services on Wednesdays during lunch and other partners may table or offer services onsite alongside their meals.

Homeward Bound of Western North Carolina

  • AHOPE is operating 7 days a week 8 a.m.-12 noon. Only essential staff will come in, only 4 at a time. Bathrooms, showers, mail, and storage remain available during the hours they are open.
  • Outreach – Client appointments are for essential meetings only, connecting with folks on the phone if possible.
  • Room in the Inn has moved to AHOPE and Homeward Bound personnel are staffing it overnight.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army (TSA) shelter has moved to isolation mode and is requiring residents to shelter in place. TSA has scaled back on staff and volunteers and is asking individuals to call ahead for emergency services. However, residents with essential jobs will be allowed to work upon providing a work schedule.

For those with emergency financial assistance needs, TSA is continuing such assistance by phone appointments only. TSA is also providing pre-packed food bags to individuals, by appointment only. The food pantry is closed but will serve individuals who call ahead. No new clients in the shelter at this time.

Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries has closed its emergency seasonal shelter for the year. Current hours are 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday; Tuesday 12 noon-2:30 p.m. Call in to receive assistance.

12 Baskets offers food to go on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11-1. It will not be a hot lunch but food that can keep longer. People are encouraged to bring their own containers. They will be allowed to fill up with as much as they need. They are also getting food to the Mission and to local learning centers. On Thursdays at Battery Park during lunch time, they will provide food to First Congregational UCC to distribute.

Veterans Administration Medical Center Homeless Services

Everyone who enters the facility is screened in their cars as they enter the campus. The walk-in clinic remains operational with staff in the office to provide in-person care, from a safe distance and with masks, when necessary.

They are checking in with veterans over the phone and screening them, encouraging home care as much as possible and social distancing measures. They are organizing food delivery and other essential items such as medication and toiletries.

Their outreach social worker is coordinating with Homeward Bound, CoCs, shelters and medical providers to triage any homeless veterans who need care or essential items.

Current VASH voucher holders continue to be placed in housing, but no new vouchers are being issued at this time. The HCHV Program has gone to a non-in-person care delivery service as much as possible.

GPD Liaisons are working with GPD grantees to ensure they have emergency response plans and that grantees are connected with local health departments and community medical providers.

Western Carolina Rescue Ministries

  • The shelter remains on isolation status. Those who leave will not be able to return. Thrift Stores are closed.
  • Lunch and dinner continue to be served outside for the general population. Food boxes are also offered.
  • All Health Clinic activities have been shifted to Dale Fell at this time.

HUD's COVID-19 Planning & Response

Current, updated guidance recommends at least three feet of space between beds for people without symptoms, and at least six feet between beds for people for people who are sick.

People camping are encouraged to space out their tents; generally better for people camping to continue to camp rather than seek shelter.

Youth Programs

The McKinney-Vento liaison has set up home deliveries for the families that do not have transportation or for whom there is a financial hardship, delivering meals from child nutrition or providing them with food boxes if there are additional needs. Eligible families can call (828) 225-4768 for assistance.

Eliada Homes has implemented a "no visitor" policy. Anyone with a fever or symptoms is restricted from programming.

Trinity Place Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter

    • All meetings with SW, therapists, GAL, and guardians are being done remotely.
    • Food is available to foster care families and clients for pick up at Trinity in the porch freezer. (Please call (828) 253-7233 or (828) 768-8955 for availability).
    • All children are being quarantined with staff.
    • They are operating under Code Purple intake process.
